On an average there is approximately 60,000+ human slaves that are right here in the United States some of them which may be right in our backyards or even right next door to our families. These victims are trapped in lives of misery—often beaten, starved, and forced to work as prostitutes or to take grueling jobs as migrant, domestic, restaurant, or factory workers with little or no pay at all.

In July 2004 the Secretary of State along with both the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Attorney General designed an Interagency Task Force that serves as a fusion center for information on human smuggling and trafficking; The HSTC Taskforce consist a combination of both analysts, officers, and investigators from such agencies as the CIA, the FBI, the Department of State, and the Department of Homeland Security.

The agencies goal and mission is to “Work hard to stop human trafficking—not only because of the personal and psychological toll it takes on society, but also because it facilitates the illegal movement of immigrants across borders and provides a ready source of income for organized crime groups and even terrorists.”

According to reports made on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s website their interagency program has resulted in more than 480 arrests, 336 indictments, and 258 convictions. The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has embarked with the FBI on an extensive outreach program with immigrant advocacy groups to raise awareness and identify victims of human trafficking. The U.S Federal Government has established a hotline for victims to call for assistance, anyone who has information to report is asked to contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center 1-888-373—7888.
